About Department of Applied Mechanics
The Department of Applied Mechanics came into existence in the year of 1961. The department offer the services in the fields of Structural Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering. The department has 14 highly qualified and dedicated faculty members with the specialization in structural and geotechnical engineering. The department is involved in various UG and two PG programs (Structural Engineering and, Soil Mechanics & Foundation Engineering) and research programs leading to Ph.D. degree. The department has been a pioneer and leader to carry out testing and consultancy works in the fields of structural engineering and geotechnical engineering.
This Institute was established in 1961 by the Parliament of India as Sardar Vallabhbhai Regional College of Engineering & Technology (SVRCET), Surat to Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat with status of “Deemed University” with effect from 4 December 2002. The Institute has been granted the status of ‘Institute of National Importance’ w.e.f. Aug. 15, 2007 by the Parliament of India.
About the Art
In recent years with sharp increase in rapid development of infrastructures e.g. high-rise structures with a greater number of basements, bridges for metro projects, fly over for roadways, BRTS etc. In metro cities made us aware of optimum usage of land and compelled the engineers to apply advanced solutions in the context of analysis and design, application of earthquake and wind load on structures, ground improvement, and earth retaining structures etc. An optimized design solution can only be possible with in-depth knowledge of various advanced techniques and use of proper judgment. Also introduced the composite material such as GFRP bar manufacturers, and researchers to exchange up-to-date knowledge on the buildings, and marine structures) including challenges and opportunities. The aim of the short-term course would be to familiarize the participants with the concepts of analysis, design and construction, for variety of structures. Basics that are essential to understand in the process to provide a sustainable design.
